2006 Arc De Triomphe Winner

Arc De Triomphe 2006One of the smallest fields in recent years went to post since 1941, but it was quality not quantity all the way and the winner of the 2006 Andre Fabre. Rail Link made the most of a clear run up the straight, hitting the front at the half-furlong marker, after beating off Deep Impact, and running on to repel the late challenge of Pride.

The 2005 Arc hero Hurricane Run returned to try and defend his crown off the back of winning the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, Shirocco, who had been unbeaten since finishing fourth in last year's Arc, and Deep Impact, the 2005 Japanese Triple Crown winner who was backed by his countrymen as if defeat was an impossibility.

In the race the early pace wasn't strong, with hat-trick seeking Group 2 winner Irish Wells running on his merits and, therefore, not in the business of making things easier for those of his rivals known to appreciate a strong gallop.

Shirocco was the most obvious of those not to like the steady pace, being sent into second to pester the leader after a couple of furlongs into going a bit quicker. Deep Impact raced, perhaps, a little more prominently than anticipated in third, and travelled well for most of the race.

Hurricane Run was settled in fourth, with the pace far from ideal for him, ahead of Rail Link, Best Name, Sixties Icon and Pride. Turning into the home straight, Shirocco assumed command, but it was to be a brief leadership and he faded to finish last. His jockey explained that he did not feel himself, and there's no reason why he should not still travel to the US for the Breeders' Cup Turf or Classic, assuming of course no long-term problem emerges. His jockey, who looked after him once his winning chance had evaporated, believes he can win another big race this season.
