2005 Arc De Triomphe Winner

\"ArcThe 2005 Winnner of the Arc De Triomphe was the Andre Fabre trained Hurricane Run who was a very impressive winner of the race. The weather played its\' part as the ground was on the soft side and ideal for the Hurricane.

In the race the pacemaker did a good job for the winner. Hurricane Run was kept towards the rear on the inside, picking up well turning into the home straight, surviving a bump at the same time, and had to be switched right to the rail a furlong and a half out. Once in the clear he used his enormous stride to good effect on ground he appreciated.

He was chased home by Westerner who was up with the pace all the way to try and make his obvious stamina tell as the Arc trip is short of his best. The Ascot Gold Cup hero will probably stay in training next term, when he will be hard to beat in defending that crown over a more suitable trip.

Last year\'s winner Bago reserves his best for this venue, and indeed for this race, even though it could be argued that his best trip is ten furlongs. It is worth pointing out, though, that he has yet to finish outside the first three in 14 starts, and he is a marvellous yardstick. He was cut to 5-1 (from 8) for the Breeders\' Cup Turf by Coral, but a strongly run 12 furlongs might not be for him. Nor would a rematch with the winner.

Derby Winner Motivator travelled well, led a furlong and a half out, but didn\'t havethe stamina to see out the trip on softer ground than he encountered at Epsom. It may be that his Derby win was overrated, although he is high class.
